Putting Windows in the Wall - by Bob MacDonald

In our homes we have windows to let light in and allow us to see the world around us. When we preach or teach, we also need to let light in and to make the truth we are teaching practical.

Using illustrations of events in our own lives or the lives of others help to explain and apply the point we are teaching and so are like windows in the walls of truth we are constructing.

The challenge is to find illustrations that add to the point we are making. Some illustrations are close and can be used with a small amount of modification. Some may give a starting point to create your own story. There are also many illustration resources available.

A simple search on the Internet for “sermon illustrations” will give a listing of many sites containing sermon illustrations. Some of the sites offer free illustrations while others want a subscription fee. Here are some websites to check out for free sermon illustrations:

www.sermonillustrations.com

http://bible.org/illustrations

www.moreillustrations.com

http://elbourne.org/sermons

There are also “stand alone” illustration databases and software that you can install on your computer. I found a free one that offers over 35, 000 illustrations and 25,000 sermons that are cross referenced with Scripture and keywords. (See www.holwick.com/database.html)

Each illustration is only a support to the main truth we are seeking to communicate, but they do help to shed some light on what we are teaching and also help to see how it applies to everyday life.

When I preach or teach I use a PowerPoint presentation to give the main points and also the Scripture verses so all can see, read and hear what the Bible says. We live in very visual society. We are used to seeing pictures and videos all the time. When I give an illustration, I try to find a picture that relates to what the illustration is talking about. I have found that the stories I tell make more of an impact when accompanied by a picture or graphic.

It is very easy to find graphics related to your illustation. I simply go to www.google.com. On the upper left hand side of the homepage is a link to “Images”. When I click on it, I can search pictures and images using key words that I have put in. There are usually thousands of images that are available. Click on a picture that would work and then copy it. Paste it into your message presentation at the place you are going to give the illustration. Sometimes the images require minor editing, but most are usable as they are.

Try adding illustrations and images to cause God’s truth to have more impact on the listeners life. Put in a window and let the light shine in!
