Preaching for Supernatural Living - by Bob MacDonald

We have heard it said that what we eat in our food diet will affect our health and how we cope with life. It is also true and what we eat in our spiritual diet will affect our spiritual health and how to cope with everyday life.

As shepherds of the sheep, we have some responsibility for the diet of the sheep. Obviously we are not exclusively responsible because each person has their own responsibility to feed on the Word of God. But when we are gathered together, it is important to consider what we are feeding the sheep.

It has become fairly commonplace to preach life coping skills and lifestyle enhancement. What I mean is that we have preached about every day life concerns and tried to be relevant. We have tried to address life and offer solutions from God's Word as people look for answers to cope with everyday life.

Though this is helpful for a while and needful at times, I'm afraid that it produces Christians that are not living to their full potential and that is why we have an unfortunate state of Christianity right now. Many Christians are not living the supernatural life that God has called us to. We have made it so much about meeting our needs that we have forgotten that there is a supernatural dimension that only we as Christians, above all other religions, are able to live in. We have forgotten to empower the sheep to live supernaturally that they may win the lost even as Christ did.

We need to preach for supernatural empowerment. Feed them a diet so they come to know the supernatural God. Encourage a relationship with God that goes beyond just the everyday focus on needs. Show them the supernatural God and how He could affect their natural circumstances. Build faith so they trust in God to do beyond the ordinary. This replaces strategies and good principles with expecting God to supernaturally intervene.

As we talk about the supernatural things that God has done in the past, we build faith that the same God, who has not changed, will do these supernatural things in their life. Christianity needs to be much more supernatural than it is now.

When we feed the people a diet of knowing and experiencing the supernatural Holy Spirit, we are encouraging them to have a dynamic relationship with the Holy Spirit so they expect to hear His voice throughout the day, expect to be led by the Spirit of God and expect Him to work through them in supernatural ways to help and minister to others. Living supernaturally is not some event that we takes place at a special meeting! It is to be the every day flow of God's supernatural life through our life. Christianity is all about His life changing our life and His life being expressed through our life.

When we have this ongoing dynamic relationship with the Holy Spirit, then we have a continual flow of the supernatural so that we are able to do things that lead to salvation, healing, deliverance and all the kinds of things that Jesus Christ did while here on earth. The supernatural is then no longer is something off in the domain of God somewhere, but rather it becomes the world in which we live in and it is expressed in the world that we live in.

Preaching for supernatural living means that we must speak about our supernatural God, how to live supernaturally in a relationship with the Holy Spirit, how to be supernaturally led by the Holy Spirit and how to take action when we are led by the Spirit so that the supernatural God changes the natural situations in our lives and the lives of others.

When we preach for supernatural empowerment, then the people will become what they eat. When they are fed to expect God is alive and working today, and expect that God will speak to them and guide them, then they will live that way and will be Christians living in the supernatural power of God.

Keep preaching the good word of God!
